Heat Cycles and when to expect
them
If you are seriously interested
in becoming a reputable Dachshund
breeder, you are going to need a vast knowledge of the breed
you choose. If it's a Dachshund, please go back to the Home
page and explore the pages about Dachshund Breed Info and Dachshund Care
Before you entertain the idea of
breeding your Mini Dachshund
you will need to know when to plan for her heat cycles. A female
Dachshund should have her first heat cycle between 6-8 mths.
You
NEVER breed your female on her first heat. It is somewhat
common
knowledge that small breed dogs can be bred when they are a year old.
But, this is not always the case. It's just a rule
of
thumb. If your Dachshund doesn't have her first heat until
she is
11 months, then you wouldn't want to breed her. You want to ensure that
your dog is physically mature. A vet visit at this point is
really important. Have your female vet checked to make sure
that
she is healthy enough to have a litter of puppies. Ask him if there are
any tests that he recommends. I think it's important to add that if you
are planning on breeding your house pet, you will need to have a plan
in place for dealing with the blood. There are little pants
you
can buy for them to wear, but it is a little extra work.
When to breed a Miniature
Dachshund
A dog will generally have a heat
cycle every 6 months. But, keep in mind that there are dogs
that
only cycle every 8 months. For us, we are more concerned with
the
maturity of the female than her her age on her second heat cycle.
We do not always breed our girls on their second heat.
If
she is still immature and we don't feel she can handle having a litter
of puppies.. we wait! It is not uncommon for dachshund
breeders
to wait till the third or even fourth heat to breed their doxies.
That's one of the little details that separate reputable dog
breeders from the rest.
*No matter how well you "plan" you cannot control when your dog has her
heat cycles.*
Do
you have your own stud or plan on using a stud service? If
you
have
your own male you will want to plan for some separate alone time for
them. If you plan on using someone elses stud, you will need
to
contact
them ahead of time and make plans for visits. Choosing the
right
male to breed to your female is crucial. Rely on the breeder
to
help you make the right choice. It may not always be the male
you
choose, but it will be the right male. Also, the breeder may
require a brusilosis
test. Brusilosis is a contagious disease that can cause
infertility in dogs.
