Dachshund Temperament
a.k.a. Dachshund Personality
By Ponderosa Pups
This is for all of the newcomers to our
breed who are wondering what Dachshund temperament or personality
is really like. ANY dachshund lover will tell you this.. the dachshund temperament
is
perfect! Or at least close enough to perfect that you will hardly
notice their faults..lol
If you've done any research at all yet, I'm sure you have read all of
these clips from around the Internet. But, let's recap...
"The Dachshund is
curious, clever, lively, affectionate, proud, brave, and amusing..."
dogbreedinfo.com
"Dachshunds are proud and bold.
With proper attention, positive reinforcement and training, they will
surprise you with a lovable and dependable temperament" dogster.com
"Dachshunds are known for their
devotion and loyalty to their owners" Wiki
"the dachshund is clever, lively and courageous to
the point of rashness, persevering in above and below ground work, with
all the senses well-developed." AKC breed info
I could have created another page just
like these to bore you silly with facts, but this is what I tell my
friends, family and customers. THERE IS NOTHING to prepare
you for how much fun you are going to have with your miniature dachshund!
They are hilarious and lively. They love to cuddle.
Dachshunds really are the sweetest, most affectionate little
dogs in the world!

My Chloe
Chloe was and is the absolute center of my love and affection.
She was technically my first dachshund house pet.
You can read about my first pair of dachshunds on my about us page. This
will tell you that Zoe (now retired and sleeping on my pillow at night)
and Dash were my first Doxies. Chloe is their child.
I knew plenty about being a dog breeder by the time I fell in
love with Chloe, but I wasn't "great" until I fell in love Chloe.
Just like all the puppies here, Chloe was born in my living
room. Having this experience truly changed my life.
It made me a better person. The world is full of
people that will tell you the very same thing about their dachshund!
I hope that if
you're reading this, you consider a dachshund
puppy from a reputable breeder that raises their puppies in their
homes,
too. It makes a difference.
Quite honestly, it makes all the difference in the world.
Dachshund Temperament
To simply say "dachshunds are loving and
affectionate" could never fully explain to you how much they love you.
I tell folks all the time that "nobody can love you like your
doxie" and it's true. Dachshunds are pack animals
and you
really see that in their personality. They really enjoy being in a
family with children and
other dogs. But, they tend to have that "one special person"
in their life. As much as I love Chloe, she probably prefers
my Dad..lol She worships him, really. Watching and
waiting for him.. grooming him if he'll let her..lol She goes
to bed with me every night.. then as soon as I fall asleep she slips
off and goes to his room to spend the rest of the night. It's
hilarious and adorable..yet, we haven't been able to sleep with our
doors completely shut since she started this silly little ritual.
Chloe is smart.
She was easy to house train and only ever destroyed one shoe
in her whole life. lol
She loves to have her belly rubbed. She
gets mad at me and pouts when she has to get medicine. She's
"human" . I understand that. I smile every time I
think about her. Just writing this almost makes me cry.
I love her so much. To say that I am a fan of
dachshund temperament, would be a major understatement.
These are a few of the questions we get about Dachshund
personalities and their answers.
Are Dachshunds good with strangers?
Chloe LOVES company and all of her fans. Just about anyone
that has been in my home has had to give Chloe some attention.
Mostly, because she thinks the world revolves around her.
Most of my dogs love to meet new people, but there are always
exceptions to the rule. On a personal note, my whole family
is outgoing and tends to talk too much, but I have a cousin that was so
shy growing up that she hardly spoke two words at family functions.
The same can be said for any dachshund temperament.
Occasionally we have a litter of puppies that has a shy or
timid turned puppy in it. It's just mother nature, I suppose.
There is also the matter of meeting a dachshund that never meets
strangers. In that case, they can be hard to warm
up. They can also be very protective of their families.
Especially the children. I have several friends who have to
put the dog up before they punish the child.
Early exposure and calm reassurance is all that you need when raising a
dachshund puppy. They are so adaptable. They make
me so
proud.
Are Dachshunds good with
kids and other pets?
Kids
Dachshunds
that are raised with kids or that are around kids often are GREAT with
kids. My little sister has two children and each of them have
their own dachshund. Remmy and Logan. (They are
both Ponderosa Puppies, of coarse) Every time my niece and
nephew spend the night here, Chloe abandons us both and sleeps with
them! One of my customers can't keep the puppy out of her 2
year olds bedroom. She's completely in love with her. I could
go on and on. I think the most important thing will be to
teach the young children not to hurt the puppy. It's ingrained in the
dachshunds personality to enjoy their family.
Other pets
I am a firm believer that dogs love being with dogs. Dogs are
pack animals. They instinctively enjoy the company of other
dogs. Especially hound dogs like our doxies. But, anything
new takes some getting used to. Just give your pet a little
time to get used to the new puppy and don't leave them alone together
until that happens. You'll soon see them playing and sleeping
together.
This is a great article
on teaching children to safely enjoy
puppies and also some info on introducing puppies to your furry family
members.
