What is Line breeding?

 Line Breeding is considered an art form by some of the most elite Dog Breeders in the world.  Line Breeding is a term used when two dogs that are related to one another are bred together.  Most commonly this will be a father/daughter or a grandfather/granddaughter.  Occasionally a niece bred to an uncle, or a mother bred to a son.  The term cross-out will be often be heard when talking about Line Breeding.  It is the concept that the two dogs bred together each have at least one different parent and therefore.. a cross-out on their pedigrees.  This is the most common form of breeding dogs for show.    

What is In Breeding?

 In-Breeding is a term used for breeding two very closely related dogs to one another.  Most commonly a brother/sister breeding. This should only be attempted by the most experienced breeder.  Even then, this is not very common.

Why do people breed like this?

Well, line breeding is known to bring out the best traits in a bloodline.  The idea that breeding two incredible dogs together that both carry an incredible bloodline will produce the best puppies.

Do you Line Breed at Ponderosa Pups?

No.  We're not being judgmental of people that do and we actually own a couple show dogs that have line breeding ancestors in their pedigrees.  They are some of our most treasured pets and breeding dogs.  We feel that our main goal is to provide incredible PETS for the wonderful people that come to us for their dachshund puppies.  Our main focus as a breeder is that our dogs all have incredible personalities while staying true to the breed standard.  There would be no benefit in line breeding when your main focus is personality.  Or, temperament, as it formally called.  However, by having a dogs in our breeding program that have outstanding pedigrees we manage to have balance.  A nice balance of well bred pets with incredible personalities.  I recommend that you ask yourself what your goal is as a breeder.  If you are interested in becoming a show breeder, then I recommend that you make some friends that are also show breeders and ask them to go into further detail about Line Breeding.
