Common Questions and Answers About The Miniature Dachshund

How much do Miniature Dachshunds Weigh?  Miniature Dachshunds should weigh between 8-11 pounds.  ALL of our Dachshunds are within this range however, it is not unusual to go a pound or two over or under.

What is the average lifespan of a Miniature Dachshund? Dachshunds are a very long lived breed.  They typically live between 12-15 yrs. A few years ago the oldest living dog in the world was actually a 22 year old wirehaired dachshund!  It is very common to talk to a doxie owner that has a dog well into their late teens.

Are Miniature Dachshunds hard to house break?
Dachshunds are very intelligent and tend to be spoiled..and a little stubborn.  While they can be a little harder to housebreak than some breeds they respond extremely well to crate training and any kind of positive reinforcement!  One of the biggest compliments we receive is how well our puppies housebreak!  We think it is because they are raised in our home and start crate training at an early age.   If you have more questions on crate training a Miniature Dachshund please click here!
What are the main health risks associated with the Miniature Dachshund Breed?
Mini Dachshunds can be prone to certain health risks and so can any other breed of dog.  There are particular health factors for each breed.  Dachshunds are famous for their back trouble.  Otherwise known as degenerative disc disease.  We are very careful and steadfast about our breeding dogs and we do everything we can to ensure healthy dachshund puppies.  .
"Responsible breeders are breeding the tendency for degenerative disc disease out of the dachshund population."

I think it should be added here that some Dachshunds can have bad teeth in the later years.  To help, you will want to keep your doxie on a good dry crunchy dog food and offer chew ropes, toys, and such that are great for helping keep their teeth clean, healthy and strong. Other than that, dachshunds are a very healthy breed of dog.  Very easy to maintain and incredibly sturdy.  Enjoy your Dachshund!  Play with him!  He'll make you a great pet!
