Choosing
the right
Nutrition
for breeding dachshunds
What kind of dog food do you
choose for your breeding dogs?
Proper nutrition
for breeding dachshunds is a major factor in producing good
healthy puppies and having good
healthy dogs! There is almost nothing that you can do for your adult
dogs or their puppies that is more important than the food you feed
them. When you are feeding adult dogs that are meant to be
bred,
they have different nutritional needs than your typical house pet.
Because our pampered house pets are generally spayed/neutered
and
lain upon our couch. Not that a breeding dog is any less
pampered, but they will need nutritional support to be able to produce
healthy puppies and remain healthy themselves. Foods that are high in
protein that are made of great ingredients will help keep them healthy
while producing dachshund puppies that are also healthy! When
a human
becomes pregnant they put her on special prenatal vitamins and
encourage her to eat healthy foods. It's the same thing in
the
doggy world. Being pregnant takes a lot out of a girl.
A
major beginners mistake is to think about taking care of the mother
AFTER the puppies are born. A successful breeder takes care
of
the mother BEFORE the puppies are born, too! The money you
spend
on good food now will mean all the difference in the world.
Generally, you will want to start feeding the mother a high
quality puppy food about a month prior to whelping and then continually
through till she weans the puppies. This will help her
maintain
good body condition and produce lots of healthy milk for her puppies.
If you have questions about a particular brand, talk to your vet and
any breeders that you may know to see what they recommend.
We
recommend diamond brand dog food, because that's what we use and
couldn't be happier with the results. Eukenuba, Iams, Science Diet,
Purina One or Purina High Pro are all great choices, too! I
generally refuse to speak in a negative manner about anyone or
anything, but this is one time I'll make exception. DON'T buy
cheap dog food. It will cause you MUCH more trouble in the
long
run than the few bucks it saves you in the beginning. Also,
don't
be fooled into believing that just because it's really expensive, that
is must be the best. Read the labels. You're
looking for
good dog food.. not expensive dog food. If you still have
questions, please feel free to email me. I am always happy to
take a few minutes out of my day to offer advice on proper nutrition
for dog breeders!
