The Piebald Dachshund

What are Piebald Dachshunds?

The Piebald Dachshund is truly one of our greatest passions as a Dachshund Breeder here at Ponderosa Pups.  Piebald Dachshunds have a pattern that is easily described as a Dachshund that has a base coloring of white. To someone that is not familiar with our breed, you may think this is a red and white dachshund (red Piebald), or a black and white dachshund. (brown and white, cream and white, etc.) I've even heard them called Spotted Dachshunds.  In many other breeds this would be called a "parti" or a "tri-color".  However, in Dachshunds, Horses, Birds, etc. it is called Piebald. Piebald Dachshunds are not "new" or "unique".  Although, I will admit that some colors are much harder to find than others.  Like the blue and tan piebald, or an Isabella and Tan Piebald Dachshund. Genetically speaking Piebald is a recessive gene.  Meaning that is must be carried or shown on both parents to produce Piebald Dachshund puppies.  This is a very common misconception held by novice or beginner Dachshund Breeders. One of my favorite memories is of an older Dachshund Breeder that I met when I first started breeding Dachshunds.  I had been on a long search for a nice small Piebald Male.  I responded to her ad, talked to her on the phone forever and made the four hour trip to her house to buy my new piebald puppy.  I was so excited I couldn't sleep for days before.  Anyway, while I was there she told me about her first two piebald dachshund litters that were born in the early 60's.  She had originally bought herself a pair of black and tan dachshunds.  Now, after waiting and anticipating that first litter, out came three little black and white puppies!  She immediately jumped all over her husband thinking he had let his Beagle in with her prized Dachshund!  So, they found the puppies some nice pet homes and went about making a fortress to house that female dachshund in for her next heat cycle!  And, wouldn't you guess..the next litter had two little black and white dachshund puppies in it!!  She finally ordered pedigrees, took pictures and sent them to the AKC to find out that her two black and tan dachshunds both had piebald parents and were producing Piebald Dachshund Puppies!! She became an avid piebald Dachshund breeder for the next forty years!
Piebald Dachshunds can all look VERY different according to what color and coat they are.  They can also have ticking which will make them look very unique.  Ticking is little spots of base color in the white markings.  Ticking may be a dominant trait.  Occasionally we have produced Dachshund Puppies with more than one pattern.  You can see this below with the Dapple Piebald.

Where did Piebald Dachshunds Come From?

Well, there is definitely not a nice book that I am aware of on the subject and finding research material that is specific to the Piebald Dachshund is practically impossible.  So, these are my opinions on the matter. Before you can ask yourself where Piebald Dachshunds came from, I think it's important to first look at where Dachshunds came from!  What all went into creating these funny little doxies?  Most resources will tell you that the original creaters/breeders of the Dachshund used different breeds to first create the Dachshund and then again to create each coat type. (smooth coat, longhair, and wirehair)  The Dachshund has been reported to have come from small hounds and small terrier types.  More than likely a form of Bassett was the main hound breed used to produce smooth coat Dachshunds.  Let's face it, there is a lot of similarities even in the modern day dogs. You might also keep in mind that the dictionary defines a Bassett as "a long, low smooth haired breed of hound with short legs and long ears"!  When they used that old breed of Bassett to create a long, low smooth haired Dachshund wouldn't you think they genetically left their colors behind, too?  It's all part of the DNA of the dachshund at this point. So the similarities in color among the two breeds would be Red and White, Black and White, Brown and White, Tri-Colored (Black and Tan and White), Blue and White, Lemon and White (our Cream and White).  It was all there.  Carried resessively throughout the years occassionally producing Piebald Dachshunds. Until Breeders got on board and started producing them on purpose. Anyway, The Long Haired Dachshund was reportedly produced using the smooth coat dachshund and a small spaniel type dog.  And the wirehaired Dachshund was produced using the smooth coat Dachshund and small terriers.  You can learn more about that by clicking on the highlighted word, but to make a long story short you again have to look at the colors of the small spaniels and terriers here just like you did the Bassetts from above.  (We also covered this issue when we were discussing the solid colored dachshunds.)There are so many spotted, parti colored, black and white, red and white, brown and white, etc. color patterns in almost all breed of dogs, much less these specific breeds that were originally used to create the Dachshund.
Several years ago the Dachshund Club of America took a vote and removed the term Piebald from the Dachshund Standard.  (A breed standard is a detailed description of a breed compiled and maintained by the breeds parent organization.)  The vote was kept pretty quiet and even then barely scraped by with one vote to win. However, there is still wording that describes a dachshund with a white base color.  Therefore, to clear up a common myth, Piebald Dachshunds are AKC registrable and very active in the show community.  There are currently MANY Champion Piebald Dachshunds! Some of the most reputable show breeders in the country have a "Save the Piebalds" button on their site.  This petition has been going around for years trying to convince the DCA to put Piebald back in our Breed Standard where it belongs!  How can you love a Dachshund and not love all the many varieties, too.  Piebalds are, after all, a very healthy and intgral part of the make up and history of the Dachshund Breed.
