Aren't they cute?
What are
Wirehaired Dachshunds?
The Wirehaired Dachshund is sweet,
loving, funny and intelligent. Wirehaired Dachshunds aren't
really rare, but they are harder to find than the other coat types.
For wirehaired dachshund lovers, they're completely worth the
search and the wait it takes to own one. You see, they are incredible!
If you haven't had the pleasure of owning a Wirehaired
Dachshund, you're really missing out. Wirehaired
dachshunds have a scruffy, wirey or rough coat. Yet, Wirehaired
Dachshunds are suprisingly soft, given the description.
They
can be kept in a natural coat or a groomer can help with stripping the
coat to give you a show appearance. They actually come a few
unique colors. Such as Wheaton and Wild Boar.
Meaning that these colors should only be respresented in
wirehaired
dachshunds, but they can occassionally show on a smooth coat doxie that
has wirehaired ancestors. But, that's genetics.. lol
Where did Wirehaired
Dachshunds come from and what makes them so special?
Historically, Wirehair
Dachshunds are
said to be a cross between a Smooth Coat Dachshund and a small terrier.
(Perhaps a Dandie Dinmont or a Scottish Terrier?)
If you would like to learn more about the wirehaired dachshund history
(just click there). The best part about wirehaired dachshunds are their
personalities. Wire Haired Dachshund Temperament is awesome! It is often said that wire dachshunds are the
class clown, but they are also the class nerd in a sense.
They are incredibly intelligent. They seem to pick up on
tricks and housebreaking a little better than their counterparts.
Through the years, I have talked to many wirehaired dachshund owners
and one things always stands out.. they will always own a wirehaired
dachshund! Always! I guess the same could be said
for us. First and foremost, we are dachshund lovers.
Anyway, I believe a wirehaired dachshund takes a minute to
get used to..lol But, once you get it.. you're hooked.
** Big year planned for Wirehaired Dachshunds at Ponderosa Pups **
We
get a lot of request for our wirehaired dachshunds. Since there
are so few reputable dachshund breeders that raise and enjoy wire
haired dachshunds. Different strokes for different folks, right?
Luckily, we generally
keep a list for our wire puppies.
We have never been driven to produce a lot of puppies
just to satisfy sales. What we concentrate on is producing
perfect wire haired dachshund puppies for great homes. We are
very proud to announce some very big changes in
our wirehaired dachshund breeding program! After years of
devoting ourselves to improving our wirehaired dachshund bloodlines, I
believe we have finally made serious advances.

This is Barney. He is a Solid Black Wirehaired
Dachshund.
We are so proud of Barney. He is a therapy dog!
Extremely intelligent and well mannered. He is
going for his canine good citizen award soon. Barney's
parents are terrific people. We get to see them really often.
They live here in Kentucky. You can see such a
light in their eyes when they talk about their Wirehaired Doxie!

This is Saxton and Gretchen! They are both Wirehaired Miniature
Dachshunds. Gretchen is cream and Saxton is
black
and
tan. They are brother and sister and live with Ruth in
Cincinatti, Ohio. They are a joy to her, her neighbors, and
her whole family. Her letters tell us that the neighbor
children come knock on the door and ask to play with them!
How cute is that?
Red Brindle Wirehaired Dachshund
Black and Cream
Wirehaired Dachshund
This is a Cream Wirehaired Dachshund.
In Wirehaired Dachshunds, Creams are classified as a light
strawberry blond color. Not to be confused with the red
wirehaired dachshund, which is much darker in color. Cream
Wirehaired Dachshunds will typically have very light blonde hairs that
mingle in their coats. (Usually on top of the head) This is
more than likely the same color genetically as an American Cream
Dachshund. You'll find this color in American Cream Piebalds,
too. They will have black noses, nails and paw pads. If your
Dachshund is similar in color, but has reddish colored nose, paw pads,
and nails..it is more than likely a dilute red.

This is Sugar and Spice. They are sisters from them same
litter. We lovingly call them "The Twins". They are
Wild Boar Wirehaired Miniature Dachshunds. Wild Boar is a
beautiful blend of brown, tan, and black hair. It should
mostly be found in Wirehaired Dachshunds, but can occasionally come out
in smooth coat dogs that have a wirehaired background.
This is not to be confused with a Red Sable. Who is Red at
the base and black at the tip on all of it's body hairs. A
lot of the older pedigrees would list longhaired red sables, or even
red shaded (red at the base with black tips on some of the hairs)as
wild boar.

These are Cream Brindle Wirehaired Dachshunds!

Black and Tan Wirehaired Dachshunds pictured above

This is a Wheaton Wire haired Dachshund. Wheaton is a color found
only
in the wirehaired variey of the dachsund. Wheaton is a lovely blend of
white and gold hairs. They have black noses, paw pads and
nails. I'm sure it would be possible to produce a wheaton smooth coat
if both parents carried the color and wirehaired in the background.
If you have one..please send pictures! I would love
to see it and share it here on this page.
