About
Brindle
Dachshunds
Brindle Dachshunds are
definitely in a class of their own. They are beautiful and
flashy in their own distinguished way. Brindle Dachshunds have that
little extra something that sets them apart from a normal Doxie.
Brindle is a pattern.
Put simply, it means a dachshund that has "stripes".
Really
pretty dark colored stripes that can either be on the main body or in
the tan points. Any color can be
combined
with a Brindle Pattern. Mostly commonly you will see Red Brindle
Dachshunds. The Black and Tan Brindle
Dachshunds
usually
have their brindle stripes in their tan points. The same can usually be said with
Chocolate and Tan Brindle Dachshunds and The Dilute colors.
You
have to take into consideration that these are rules of thumb..but,
anything is possible. Ponderosa
Pups has worked for years to
try to
produce
a chocolate and tan or dilute with brindle striping on the main body.
If you have one of these, please send pictures! I
would
love to see it and share it on this page.
Now, genetically speaking
Brindle is a dominant gene. Meaning that you could breed a
solid
colored dog that does not carry Brindle to a dachshund that shows
Brindle Stripes and still produce Brindle
Dachshund puppies. There
are
always exceptions to every rule. There are hidden Brindles!
Dogs that are genetically Brindle Dachshunds that show no
sign of
Brindle Markings. They produce Brindle
Dachshund Puppies.
This is more common in the English Cream lines.
Still, it's
really neat.
Unlike the Dapple
Dachshunds, you can breed a
brindle dachshund to a brindle dachshund and everything will be fine.
It just makes the chances better for producing Brindle
Dachshund puppies. As Brindle Dachshund Breeders can tell
you.. it
is
always different with every litter.

I
would like to add some information about a reverse brindle dachshund.
This is a bit of a genetic anomaly. Totally
beautiful, and
I must admit that is a little hard to spot at first. I first
noticed this pattern on a black and tan brindle dachshund many years
ago. Since as this was the first brindle I had ever seen.. it
didn't really dawn on me that Tiger was different. He was a
stunning dark colored dog with light tan stripes allover his body.
Where most brindle stripes only attach themselves to the variations of
red. Normally a black and tan brindle dachshund would have a black body
and only show their stripes in their tan points. Whereas a
Red
Dachshund would show their brindle stripes allover their body since
there entire color is red. Somehow the
brindle gene attached itself to the base color instead of the usual tan
point stripes.
Anyway,
when I started breeding the English Cream Brindles I noticed there were
occasionally dogs that were yellow with dark stripes and others that
were dark bodied with yellow stripes. I have always been very
interested in the actual genetics of a Dachshund and to me.. this is
very interesting information. I look forward to experimenting
with this in the next few years. If you have more information
about the reverse brindle dachshund, please let me know.

This
is Brindy. She is a Black and Tan Brindle Dachshund.
Smooth
Coat, lovely and a great mother. This is a great example

tan points.
These are Brindle Wirehaired Dachshunds. Totally adorable!
These
are Black and Tan Brindle Piebald Dachshunds. Just like
Brindy,
they only show their brindle striping in their tan points.
It is always a proud moment for Brindle Dachshund Breeders when you can

This is a Red Brindle Piebald Dachshund Puppy!
His name is Charlie Chaplin and he has grown up right here with us.
THIS
is an example of a red shaded smooth coat puppy. I put this
picture on this page because I often see Red Brindle
Dachshund Puppies
for Sale and when you see the picture, it usually turns out
to be a red
shaded. I thought this would help show the difference and
maybe
help new brindle dachshund breeders distinguish between the two.
We will add new Brindle Pictures as we produce them!
