Toy Dachshund

A Dachshund by any other name..

Toy Dachshund?  Teacup Dachshund Breeders?  Is that the same thing as a miniature dachshund and a miniature dachshund breeder?  Well.. Yes! If it wasn't enough that our breed has half a dozen nicknames and dozens of misspellings, we also have a few adorable ways of saying the "miniature" part of miniature dachshund!  Toy Dachshund being the most popular. Teacup Dachshund coming in a close second.  Now, not to keep bringing up good old Google, but when I first began to research doxies many years ago..terms like toy and teacup dachshund were barely a blip on the radar.  Now, toy dachshund and toy dachshund puppies for sale have skyrocketed in popularity!  I actually received an email yesterday asking me if I was a teacup dachshund breeder?

Now, just to clear things up..

The Dachshund Breed is shown in TWO classes.  Miniature and Standard.  Miniature Dachshunds should weigh between 8-11 pounds at a year old and Standard Dachshunds should weigh between 16 and 32 pounds.  There is technically NOT a class called toy or teacup and anyone that is offering toy or teacup dachshund puppies for sale is either reffering to a miniature or claiming that there doxie puppies are going to weigh below the accepted 8 pounds at a year old.  There are miniature dachshunds that weigh less than 8 pounds..by a pound or two, but there are also miniature dachshunds that weigh a pound or two more.  Still.. the AKC and all reputable dachshund breeders only refer to our dachshunds as either miniature or standard.
You might want to read our Dachshund History and Origin if you are interested in learning more about where dachshunds came from.

*UPDATE*

We just added a section on our Dachshund History further explaining the smaller sized Doxies.  Namely, Rabbit and Dwarf sized Dachshunds have been a part of our breed for a very long time and are still actively bred and hunted with in Europe.  I had several long converstations with a dachshund breeder in Canada that specifically breeds Rabbit Dachshunds and couldn't believe we don't use the classification here.  Really interesting!

Spreading the Word

In some small way it makes me wonder if Miniature Dachshund owners, breeders and enthusiasts are spending enough time sharing with the general public about our breed!  I mean there are millions upon millions of dachshund fans..but, with so many different ways of saying "miniature" and "Dachshund".. no wonder folks are confused.
Either way, welcome to our site.  We hope you spend some time here learning about the amazing Dachshund Dog!
If you have questions, never hesitate to ask!
